  “That’s so sweet.” Belle’s chin dropped as she confessed, “I thought you were paying that woman to have your baby because I couldn’t have one.”

  Uly’s gaze shot left and right. “And I arranged all that and got her with child in the few hours we were apart?”

  Belle slugged him playfully. “I didn’t say it made sense. It was my broken heart thinking, not my head.” She pressed a hand against his chest, smoothing his shirt. “If you’re staying here, what are you going to do for a living? I can’t imagine a father who wants you to work in the oil fields actually letting you be a man of leisure.”

  “Not in my genetic makeup,” said Uly, covering her hand with his. “You are looking at the new very highly paid pre-planning liaison for the luxury homes project in Eagle’s Toe. I’ll have to commute back and forth for a while. I hope that’s okay.”

  “Well, as long as you are very, very highly paid,” Belle said in a tiny, teasing voice. “Also, if you ever put me through that kind of pain again, I will invite your mother to come live with us.”

  “Trust me, I will be a very good boy.” Uly’s lips met Belle’s and they kissed softly for several long seconds, clinging to each other, both afraid to let go.

  Lulamae rang the tiny bell that brought Rita to the pool. “Rita, dear, be so kind as to bring me the number of my realtor.”
